1. Royal Villa at Grand Resort Lagonissi, Athens, Greece
Price: $50,000 per night

For the kind of money that one pays for a night’s stay can feed a small nation for a week but one of the perks of being super-rich is: you get to squander money. Hotel guests here have all the privacy they want while enjoying a private beach, steam room, and a heated pool. The only other people who could be spotted in the suite besides the guests are the butler, pianist, and chef.

2. Hugh Hefner Sky Villa, Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas
Price: $40,000 per night

It’s not so strange that North America’s most expensive hotel and second most expensive in the world is named after the iconic Hugh Hefner. It is very appropriate that the builder of the Playboy Empire will have his hotel built in “Sin City” Las Vegas, the ultimate dedication to urban decadence…and luxury. The $40k suite’s features: eight-foot revolving bed, ceiling mirrors, exercise room, sauna, and an indoor waterfall. Half the price you pay probably goes to the hotel’s water bill.

3. Four Seasons Hotel, New York, New York
Price: $30,000 per night

It seems the design of the 52nd floor penthouse had the word lavish printed on it. Why would it be furnished with gold-thread curtains, mother-of-pearl-inlaid walls, onyx bathroom tiles, and a (Gasp! Call the World Wildlife Fund!) shark-skin coffee table. It does not stop there. The Zen room has a waterfall. An in-house masseuse comes with the package, so does a butler that guests can summon round the clock, and a chauffeured Rolls Royce.

4. President Wilson Hotel, Geneva, Switzerland
Price: $33,000 per night

Security is the byword in this hotel that sits right next to the United Nations Headquarters. It was specifically designed for heads of state and other dignitaries. The Imperial Suite has bullet-proof glass and alarm buttons. It is accessible only by a private elevator. The suite has four bedrooms, five bathrooms (the logic is slippery), a library, a cocktail lounge, a Steinway grand piano, and a dining table with a 26-person seating capacity.

5. Manila Hotel, Manila, Philippines
Price: $2,500 per night

On room price alone, the Manila Hotel should not be on this list but there is a good reason why it is. You cannot put a price tag on history or elegance, and the Manila Hotel has these in spades. It was built in 1909, so that would make it 100-years-old exactly. Other luxury hotels brag of the celebrities that lived there, Hollywood actors and actresses, pop music stars, and what have youbut can they claim that the General Douglas MacArthur made their hotel his residence for years? Yes, the same MacArthur who made the monumental promise: “I shall return.” And he did. He probably meant he wanted to return to the Manila Hotel.
