The dictionary defines hobbies as activities or interests that one pursues in his or her spare time. This is often done as a form of relaxation or for pleasure. Each one of us has different interests and therefore we elect different hobbies for ourselves but some hobbies seem to be universal. Here are the top five most popular hobbies the world over.

1. Sports
Be it basketball, sepak takraw, volleyball or badminton, people loves to sweat it out. Part of the reason why sports is a popular hobby is that most people are getting health conscious. Sports also give them a fun way of losing weight and keeping fit. It also affords most people a great way of busting stress.

What is more, playing sports gives them a chance to further bond with other people: family and friends, even strangers who share the same passion.

2. Watching TV
Although no official statistics exist on how many homes have TV sets, it would be safe to say that a majority of homes around the world have at least one TV set. In the United States, more than 50 percent of all households have three or more TV sets while another 46 percent have one to two TV sets, at least according to Nielsen’s. In developing countries, even slums have television antennas.

It is no surprise, therefore, that watching TV is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. It is easily accessible, readily available and is practically free.

3. Reading
Whether it is e-books, books, magazines, newspapers and other published materials, people around the world still love to read. Just imagine, the world’s best-selling book, the Bible is estimated to have been bought by around 2.5 billion to 6 billion people, a range of estimates made by Russell Ash and Businessweek. That is close to the earth’s current population. Add the other bestsellers that sold millions of copies and it is easy to see why reading is still very popular.

Most collectors tend to have an obsession of not only accumulating the things of interest, but also organizing and cataloguing it.

Collectors often expand their social networks by joining associations and meeting up with like minded individuals with whom they could swap items for their own mutual collections. It also help them get rid of stress while having something worthwhile and tangible to work on.

5. Surfing the World Wide Web.

Real life has its own parallel dimension in the Internet. It is safe to say that the World Wide Web has mirrored everything in real life from entertainment to social interactions. There is always something to do on the Internet, from communicating with friends and business partners, to playing games, to listening to music, to watching videos and movies. Some people even have a more exciting online life than offline.
