3D content is the next big thing. Even without a clear industry standard, we are seeing a lot of 3D devices and content popping up: 3D still cameras, 3D video capture devices, 3D TV, 3D games, 3D browsers, 3D programs, and 3D movies. Unlike 3D of the 1950s to the 1970s, 3D technology is here to stay. This is because the technology has been upgraded, thus giving way to 3D content that does not make you dizzy, make you squint in the dark, and is actually very bright.

During the past few months, the barrage of 3D movies is palpable. It seems that every animated film that has come out or is currently in production is shot, in 3D. While for some, especially old horror movies, 3D is giving them a new lease on life with directors and producers altering the original film and making it into 3D versions. Admittedly some movies are better than the others, yet still some are better left to 2D. Out of the many 3D movies that came out, here are the top 5 3D movies.

5. Monsters vs. Aliens.
Earning a little less than $200 million in its entire run, Monsters vs. Aliens ushered in the popularity of 3D movies in this era. Although preceded by 3D animation like Coraline and others, it was Monsters vs. Aliens that made people sit up and take notice of 3D. The movie was an enjoyable romp, but critics panned it as “merely” enjoyable and passable. Nevertheless, for sounding the alarm, Monsters vs. Aliens deserves a place in our Top 5

4. It Came From Outer Space.
This is actually a classic 3D movie from 1953 written by Ray Bradbury, considered to be one of the country’s greatest horror, sci-fi and mystery writers. Although the movie has been dismissed as cheesy, those who have watched it found a suspenseful horror film that would appeal even today. Forget about Final Destination 3D, watch this one in 3D if you get the chance!

3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The sixth installment of the very popular J.K. Rowling series made into movies, seeing Harry on the big screen is a delight in itself. The highly anticipated and top grossing movie opened to rave reviews last week, and is still getting more applause from audiences worldwide. The movie’s 3D version is an added bonus, although rumors have it that only the first 15 minutes of introduction will be shown in Imax 3D.

2. Coraline 3D.
One of director Henry Selick’s best work, and based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, how could this movie ever fail? Coraline 3D is a masterpiece both due to its storyline and its 3D effects. Truth be told, Gaiman’s story would do well in 2D screens, but heck, the 3D effects made it standout. It was taking your cinema experience to another level, or more appropriately, adding another dimension to your viewing experience.

1. Up.
If opening this year’s Cannes Film Festival was not any indication, Disney’s Up is one of the most beautiful 3D films ever released. Not only is this the funniest movie produced by Pixar and Disney, it is also one of the most heartwarming. Critics and viewers have loved the movie: from its unlikely hero to the palpable emotions presented on screen. Up has the ability to convince you that what you are watching are real humans (and well, talking dogs). This ability to make you identify with animated characters is quite a feat that has not been successfully done before. And thanks to the movie’s 3D effects, it makes viewing it all the more better!
