The Battle of Gaming Consoles

Call it the battle of the consoles. For years, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have been trying to beat one another as to who can come up with the slicker console and with the better controls that would attract more than its share of game developers. Even to the point of incorporating miscellaneous add-ons that have nothing (well, almost nothing) to do with gaming – like having virtual worlds, supporting Wi-Fi connections, or having the ability to stream movies.

Nintendo Wii is by far the most family-friendly of the three: its games are not all gore and you do not have to wait to have the living room all to yourself to play your favorite shoot-me-up. Also, I find the Wii Remote a great innovaton, getting sedentary gamers off the couch and flailing about in some freaky exercise routine. This console is just great when you play with your family or a group of friends.

In terms of graphics, I’d have to give it to Xbox 360. Although you may argue that it’s a toss up between Playstation and Xbox, I think that resolutions are greater with the Xbox, while games are more realistic (not to mention that there are more games available for the Xbox). Also, online gaming continues to be Xbox 360′s domain.

Sony Playstation 3, on the other hand, comes in as a close runner-up to Xbox. Graphics-wise, it is great, but what’s the use of having really great graphics rendering when you don’t have enough games to play with? PS3, however, is the Swiss-knife of gaming consoles. It comes with a Blu-ray HD disc player, built-in Wi-fi, a Web browser to go along with its Internet connectivity. Sony seems to be making up for the lack of games with non-game related features. The good thing is, the company has been constantly improving its features and offers them for free.

As for me, I personally go for the console with the widest selection of great games. I don’t stick to a particular brand or console if there are no games that I find interesting to play on them. My friends would almost always chide me for my “avarice” at owning a PlayStation, a Wii, and an Xbox360. I tell them that the avid gamer in me just does not want to miss on a great game that’s exclusively available on one platform and not the other, especially if the reviews are in and they are all glowing.
