Mozilla’s Fennec Browser: The Firefox Version for Mobile Phones

Mozilla recently launched the first release of its mobile browser, Fennec. Touted to be the mobile Firefox, Fennec is currently in rough beta and understandably, it has a lot of bugs and things that need to be worked out.

At first look, however, Fennec is quite impressive, very easy to use even with the smaller screen space of a Smartphone. I particularly liked the integration of touch screen features. It allows you to zoom, scroll and pan using your fingers or stylus. You can also “flick” the page you are on to transfer to another tab.

What I found particularly interesting is that it gives you the option to download add-ons, which is the benchmark and the advantage of Firefox over all other browsers. Add-ons, I think, makes the Firefox browser your own, making it easy for you to do the things you need and want to do, without having to go through a lot of installations to your desktop. Just give me my add-ons and I am happy! And the fun part is, installing add-ons of Fennec is as easy as it is on Firefox!

Mozilla, however, does not stop there. Fennec has the features we have all come to love with Firefox: easy bookmarking features, that all-in-one navigational bar, and customization features via about:config. If you have used the latest Firefox 3.1, you would be amazed that Fennec also has TraceMonkey, a JavaScript engine that made Firefox 3.1 faster!

I do have one beef though. Fennec has put its menu on the left part of the screen, where you would have to move any page you are on to the left to see it. It is a small hindrance, however, considering that Smartphones have really smaller screens. And with that out of the way, you can find the familiar buttons: back, forward, advanced preferences and favorites. You can access a lot of functions from thereon, including add-ons management, themes, plugins, and privacy settings.

Fennec is great at optimizing your screen space. When you scroll down, the address bar disappears, giving you more space for the Web page you are viewing. That and the "hidden" side bar menu, gives you your whole screen to read on.

We had to borrow a Nokia N810 just to see how it runs for ourselves. I do hope Mozilla gets Fennec out for the iPhone soon. Unfortunately, I heard that the iPhone is not one of those platforms that Mozilla is targeting, along with Palm and Blackberry. It will soon have Fennec versions for every other phone though.

The IPhone has many top-notch things, but it has been the subject of many complaints. Although the 3G version of the IPhone has been released late last year, it still created several quips from most of its users (like myself).

The Reasons Why We Should Switch to Android Phones

I love my iPhone. It’s probably one of the greatest inventions of recent years, and it looks nice too. However, ever since Google came out with its own phone late last year, I have been curious if I should switch over to G1.

One of the things challenging the iPhone right now is the myriads of phones using Android OS. The reasons for switching to an Android-based phone like G1 are the same reasons why open source is such a hit today.

Cost-wise, it is literally free. This means that there’s a minimal or absolutely no additional charges passed on to the consumer buying the phone. This also means that the phones are considerably less expensive than the iPhone. Another is that it will be easy-to-spot problems, and to correct them. With the code available for just about anybody’s perusal, a lot of developers would be available to come up with modifications and improvement to the code.

That advantage is further stretched to the fact that having an open code can also lead to more applications and software developed for the OS.

A unique reason why to go for Android-based phones now is a game that Google is developing, called WiFi Army. Early descriptions of the game say that it utilizes Wi-Fi, GPS and maps to make a very exciting game. When you register, you get a list of other registered users within a range of 300 feet. You then select a player or players (you can choose as many as you like!) to play with, then you send out the invitations. Once the other party accepts, each of you will be sent a photograph of the other.

Now how do you win this game? The premise of the game is simple. You try and locate your opponent using GPS and Google maps. Once you find him, you take a picture which is automatically uploaded to Wi2P servers via Wi-Fi. The servers will do a verification of the picture you took, and when it says that you shot the right person, you’re the winner.

How’s that for an ultra modern and updated game of hide-and-seek? No more counting 1… 2… 3… ready or not, here I come!

I’ve never heard of any news of Apple coming out with a similar game.

Top 5 Must-Have Gadgets in Your Bag

Many of us have developed such a love for gadgets that we simply can’t leave home without it. Get your toothpaste and toothbrush out of your bag to make way for these:

1. iPhone 3Gs.
The iPhone is just about the most kickass phone on the planet right now. What’s more, it’s really more than just a phone, it’s jam-packed with more apps than I care to fiddle around with, it organizes my schedules, it allows me to get work done on the road. It provides full Web browsing at a much faster pace than my old Nokia phone. And not to mention SatNav, it goes with its impressive GPS capability. What else could a man ask for?

2. THE Digicam.
With the iPhone’s 2 megapixel camera, the pictures are just not going to be what one hopes it to be. So a Panasonic Lumix comes in handy. I like my photos to be very crisp, the colors have to be just in real life. Lumix uses Leica lens, and I think that speaks for itself. Still, this camera produces great quality pictures even at high zoom ranges. It’s great when you’re on the road trying to snap at something moving too.

3. The Other Digicam.
Probably one of the best tech gadgets to have is the Kodak Easyshare Z612. This super refined digicam is impressive with a ton of features that you just don’t get from other point and click cameras. It’s actually a sub-SLR but I don’t get to use it much often. The menus are kind of tricky and so it functions like an instamatic for me.

4. PSP.
This is great for those times you’re stuck in traffic, or waiting for a date. Sure, there are not much games coming out of the PS3 recently, but most PSP fans are happy with the games that they already have. My friend who’s an avid (rabid?) gamer recommends Nintendo’s DS Lite, but I just can’t see myself forking over that much money for another portable console just to while my time away.

5. The Music Player.
Sorry Apple lovers, but while I’m bowled over by the iPhone, I pretty much hate the iPod. I find Creative’s Zen X-Fi better in a lot of aspects. For one, it has excellent sound quality, much better the iPod if I may say so. And that’s all that matters with music players, isn’t it? Zen also comes with a lot of other add-ons that makes it a more logical buy. It has a good FM radio and a nice screen. It came with great headphones. And it has Wi-Fi, but it’s thoroughly limited.
