LCD vs Plasma TV

If you’ve been in an appliance center in the recent months, you’ve probably noticed that flat screen TVs have taken more and more room, pushing their Jurassic CRT cousins into the background. If you’re looking to buy a new TV and have the budget for it, you might be wondering what’s right for you: plasma or LCD TV?Unless you have eyes like the hawk, picture quality between plasma and LCD TVs should be just about the same.

Only plasma TVs can display true black colors–which come in handy when you’re watching a horror film or some dark colored TV program. On the other hand, LCDs have a higher native resolution, or have more pixels on a screen than a similar-sized plasma Plasma TVs have a wider viewing angle than LCD TVs, all other things being equal. It means that you can sit farther on either side of the TV and still see the whole picture with a plasma TV than a LCD TV.

In the long run, however, plasmas might get screen burn. For example, if you pause a DVD long enough, that image will appear on your plasma screen as if it were a ghost image. LCDs, by the nature of its technology, are less prone to screen burn.

If you’re aiming to save some dough and still want to have a large flat screen telly, then you’d be better off with a plasma TV. Large LCD TVs are usually more expensive. For smaller screens, however, LCDs are a good choice because they tend to be cheaper with higher resolution and better picture quality.

A general rule of thumb is that LCDs are a better choice if you’re buying a TV that’s smaller than 42″. However, as technology becomes more improved for both plasmas and LCDS, this rule is fast becoming moot.
