How Can Backlinks Improve PageRank?

Backlinks quite simply are inbound links from other sites that point directly to your Web site or page. And while backlinks are that simple to define, they carry an important role to improving your Web site’s or page’s PageRank.

The page rank is a numerical indicator or gauge of the importance or popularity of a particular Web page or Web site on the Internet. This means that the more popular the page or the site is, the higher the PageRank is.

Although the algorithms used by search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN are top secret, it is generally accepted that PageRank is one of the more important considerations in these engines’ ranking schemes. Conversely, the more popular your page gets and the higher PageRank you have, the higher you rank on search results.

If you have a Web page, it is only logical to hope for a higher PageRank. And this is where backlinks come in.

Many Webmasters and search engine optimization, or SEO, experts think that most of your PageRank is largely influenced by backlinks. Google, for one, uses backlinks to calculate a Web page’s rank. For Google, a link from another site is a vote of confidence and an indicator of importance. Organically, a site owner would only link to you if you have good information to share, or are friends with you, or found something interesting in your site. SEO experts estimate that around 80% of your own page’s PageRank is determined by the number of backlinks that you have.

As stated above, the higher your popularity is, the higher your PageRank gets, and the higher you get ranked. Simply put, the ranking of your Web site or Web page is a matter of popularity as measured by the PageRank, which is boosted by the number of votes you get by way of backlinks.

Generally, all inbound links to your site is good news for your PageRank, as Google and other search engines do not really particularly care where these links come from. They just count them as one vote. It is important, however, to keep in mind two things. One is that backlinks from other popular sites (search engines, YouTube, and other high PageRank sites) are weighed more heavily than backlinks from less popular sites. The other thing is that search engines have identified a number of illegal link farms (a group of Web sites that engages in spamdexing by creating links to one another to increase their PageRank), and a backlink coming from one of these would have a negative impact on your PageRank.
