At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last January, Dell unveiled this sleek, sexy, ultrathin notebook called Adamo which had techies speculating furiously. Is this going to be a Macbook Air nemesis? Will this be the notebook that will give Apple a run for its money?

Sadly, answers could not immediately be found, because Dell revealed no specs nor internal features (booting wasn’t even allowed, reportedly). The sleek, black Adamo was literally just displayed for all to see and nothing else. On the outside, the machine sports a 13″ display covered edge-to-edge in glass, three USB ports, an eSATA jack, a backlit keyboard. It also is 0.65″ thick.

Tech monsters didn’t know whether they should be excited or not. After all, specs are what they eat for breakfast, and in this case, there wasn’t any.

From the looks of it, though, it seemed promising. It appeared to be similar to the Macbook Air and the HP Voodoo Envy 133 when it comes to high style. And indeed, Dell has announced that the Adamo is their new “luxury line;” not a single model but a brand for a new series of uber-modern, high-end computers. If you take a look at the Adamo website (http://www.adamobydell.com), you are immediately greeted by a classy flash intro. The design and presentation of the entire sight screams “chic.”

OK, so it looks darn good, that’s for sure. But will it be as good performance-wise?

Well, it is now the middle of March, and the Dell Adamo has begun to be available to consumers. Finally, we have specs to talk about!

The first installment of the Adamo series was launched 17th March, and these are the given specs:
• 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo U9300
• integrated Intel X4500 graphics
• 2GB RAM
• 128GB SSD

The price? $1,999. There is a reported $2,699-priced version with 1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM, and 3G support.

With these, the expectant hopes of notebook junkies plummeted down. It seems that what the Adamo offers in looks, it cannot make up for in performance. Online, the general reaction of users recently has been that Dell Adamo, like other high-style laptops, are only good for show. You can easily get a cheaper, lower-end one that really delivers in terms of performance.

Well, Dell did point out that it was a “luxury” line for the “style-conscious” and that it was not meant to be compared to other laptops on the market. The name itself – Adamo – means “to fall in love,” and it is their intent for users to fall in love with the feel and quality of the craftsmanship.

Design versus performance — which would you go for?
