Asus Eee PC 1004DN
Notebook or netbook? One of the key features that separate a netbook from a notebook is the presence of an optical drive.
Now Asus comes and blurs that line with its newest installment for the Eee series – the Asus Eee PC 1004DN. This shiny new creation sports a ‘super-multi optical disc drive’. In other words, it is a CD/DVD writer. How’s that for revolutionary, eh?
Asus has certainly come a long way (and in such a short time) from its first Eee PC. The original Eee was a teeny-weeny contraption with a 7-inch display and a measly 2GB solid-state drive, but it did set a trend that developed into a netbook war of sorts. We have this to thank for the many good-quality netbook choices that we have today.
In the wake of many rumors that circulated around the Net, Asus finally made the official announcement on March 28 and posted the specs on their website.
The Eee PC 1004DN features a 10-inch LED backlit display with a standard 1024×600 resolution that can play 720p high-definition video, as well as a 6-cell Li-Ion battery that gives you some good 5-plus hours of life when fully charged. Its ergonomic keyboard is 92% the size of a typical desktop keyboard and comes with a larger ‘Shift’ key for ease of typing. It weighs in at 1.45 kg including the hard drive, battery, and optical drive. Running on a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 processor, it can support up to 2GB of RAM and 120GB of storage. An Express card expansion slot lets you connect USB 2.0 and PCI Express devices.
Communications-wise, the 1004DN comes with a 1.3 MP webcam and an integrated software suite. The EzMessenger application lets you communicate with friends without using an Internet connection, and Data Sync allows you to easily synchronize your Eee PC to your desktop. You also get a Font Resizer for easy viewing of documents and convenient Internet browsing.
For connectivity, it features a built-in Bluetooth v2.1 module and 802.11 b/g/n wireless.
Oh, and here’s something else: fingerprint security! Called the ASUS Data Security System, it allows you to log on to the PC using your fingerprints, and encrypt a folder using the same process.
Other features include Eee Splendid, which provides 4 visual modes for you to enjoy, and SHE (or Super Hybrid Engine) technology that monitors energy usage to help prolong battery life.
No prices and shipping dates have been officially announced, although it will reportedly be released this April and may have a price range starting at USD500.
