5 Things to Survive in an Uninhabited Island

Australia’s “Best Job in the World” ad caused a stir around the world to land on an idyllic care-taking job of the Hamilton Island. Then again, the lucky person who grabbed this employment gets to enjoy first class accommodations. But what if you are to stay in an uninhabited island without any amenities?

Here are basic survival tips in case you decide to brave the isolated outdoors:

lighter

First thing in the list is a full and durable lighter. Expect to be making a fire if you plan to survive in a deserted island. You will need to boil water to come up with a potable supply. You will also need to have an accessible source of heat to cook your food. During evenings, you need to endure the cold with manual heating such as lighting up coconut shells that could serve as coal—if you know how.

clothes

Another necessity that you should take with you from civilization is a whole bag of clothing. Unless you want to take the concept of ‘raw living’ in its most basic sense, bring clothes in which you will be perfectly comfortable during the day, and well protected at night. You can also use these materials for your makeshift bed.

protective creams

Third on the list are protective creams. These miracles in a bottle are must-haves in any adventure in the wild. They may not fit in ‘raw’ quest, but you will definitely need them to make sure you get to go home alive. Bring insect- repelling creams such as those for mosquitoes and animal ticks. You will never know when a malaria or dengue-infesting pest is on the loose to hunt its next prey. Sunscreen is also a must for you to travel around the island and bask under the sun worry-free.

knife

When in a deserted island, it will be useful to be equipped with a sharp knife. This device will be valuable in easily cutting branches and getting fruits, and also as a protective weapon.

Finally, you should never embark on any outlandish trip without a push-talk radio. While this may seem too primitive for your taste, this must be your most practical option to stay connected to civilization in case of emergencies. Cellular phones are useless as the coverage of your network carrier will most probably not include distant areas, such as that of your island of choice. Push-talk radios, on the other hand, are reliable devices that come with longstanding batteries. With these at hand, you are sure to survive the adventure of your life.
