10 Ways to Pimp Your PC

10 Ways to Pimp Your PC

In an age of competitive and aggressive digital upgrade, getting left-out is a major turn-off. What’s worse, it’s just as shameful to own a piece and not know how to tweak it for some pampering and pimping. This article provides 10 ways to enjoy your personal computer; somewhat similar to MTV’s Cribs, only for computers.

1. Specifications are vital!
A motherboard that can support more Random Access Memory (RAM) – 1 or 2 GB should be enough – and has Socket 478 up to 800MHz FSB is always best. MSI products are very promising. Clock speed of 2 GHz is enough. Intel’s Core 2 Duo (or the lesser Core Duo) or AMD’s Athlon processors are top choices. Next is the Front Side Bus (FSB). The higher the MHz, the faster the CPU response from system inputs.

Next, you need to look into the L1 and L2 cache, which indicates the level of your CPU memory. The L1 specifications are incorporated in the microprocessor, but the L2 may range from 128 KB to 2 GB. Using any of these caches will save you more time as it directs faster access to the operation data and RAM. Finally a hard drive that can hold at least 120 GB is ideal to store a bulk of multimedia files.

2. You need not spend a lot for a licensed suite of productivity applications.
You can easily download OpenOffice for free! It is the best alternative you can get regardless of your PC’s Operating System (OS). It includes lightweight, yet sturdy Writer (similar to MS Word), Calc (similar to MS Excel), Impress (similar to MS Powerpoint), Base (for database), Draw (for creating diagrams) and Math (for mathematical computations).

3. It is very ideal to get connected!
A computer has ceased to be a personal leisure, and has become a tool for social networking. An internet speed of 10 MBps is modest. This will allow you to get in the loop of the worldwide web. You can surf, download, chat, email, and all the added benefits of being hooked (or unhooked as some companies offer portable wireless internet access)!

4. PortableApps can be very useful and fun.
This is a group of open-source (free!) applications that you can install in your PC. You can enjoy your own antivirus, web browser, instant messenger, office suite, games, calendar/task manager and email client, among other applications. You can pick those that you prefer or take the whole package at a very low disk space!

7. The interface you choose will greatly depend on your personal taste, but if slick is in your mind, then the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment or LXDE can provide a great array of features for your PC. You can also check out GNOME Environment and K Desktop Environment for comparison, and then choose!
